最先端の3D プリンター事業と伝統的鋳造事業を展開している株式会社JMCは伝統的な技術とデザインの新しい可能性を求めるべく、錫と木の2 つの素材を融合させた器、"wood casting bowl"のプロトタイプを発表しました。
JMC Corporation, specializing in the 3D printing business and the casting business, released the prototype of "wood casting bowl",
a bowl made by fusion of two materials (tin and wood), in pursuit of new possibilities of tradition and design.
■製作の背景／ Background of Production
自動車や家電、医療機関メーカー等の多様な業種のお客さまに3D プリンターや鋳造の技術を使ったサービスを提供する中、当社の持つ伝統的な技術とデザインの新たな可能性を探し求めたのが本プロジェクトの始まりです。
今回発表しました"wood casting bowl"では、金属と木材の全く性質の異る2 つの素材の融合に挑戦をしています。制作の過程には自社の鋳造や加工の技術が使われており、デザイナー・アートディレクターとして数々の企業のブランディングを手掛け、当社の取締役でもある山﨑晴太郎がデザインを担当し、製造現場で働く若手社員のコラボレーションによって実現しました。
While providing services utilizing our 3D printing and casting technologies to customers in various businesses including cars, home electronics, and medical device manufacturing, the project was initiated to pursue new possibilities of merging traditional technologie sand design. For the newly presented "wood casting bowl", we challenged the fusion of two materials with completely different characteristics: metal and wood. Our casting and processing technologies were used during the construction process. The product was designed by our company director, Seitaro Yamazaki who is a designer and art director with experience in branding for many companies, and manufactured mainly by younger workers in our manufacturing site.
■デザインコンセプト／ Design Concept
JMC は、鋳造技術と3D プリンターを事業の柱にする製造業である。
その工程において職人の手仕事とデジタル技術を掛け合わせ、次世代の日本のものづくりの形を模索している。
相反する二つの要素を一つの形に帰結させること、それを今回のプロダクトの中でも体現したいと考えた。
wood casting bowl は、砂型鋳造と木工の技術を合わせながらその二つの素材が融解しているようなプロダクトである。これは、融解した金属を旋盤加工した木とつなぎ合わせ、定着させる工法で制作されている。このプロダクトにおいては、使用者と中に入れる液体との間には錫と木の二つの素材が存在する。熱伝導率も素材特性も異なる二つの素材に向き合いながら、温度、質感、触感との対話に使用者を誘う。薄い錫と厚い木。触れる面の厚さは素材ごとに異り、二つの身体性を使用者に与えることになる。
向き合うべきは中に留められた内容物か、あるいはその間にある素材なのか。
金属の冷却収縮による引けや、融解金属による木の炭化など、二つの素材の持つ異なる特徴をいかに調和させながら、偶然性を取り込みつつ形を与えていくのか、という点が一番のポイントとなった。社内の若いスタッフとともに実現したこのプロジェクトは、ものづくりの未来を探るJMC としての新たな挑戦である。（山﨑晴太郎）
JMC is a manufacturing company, with its mainstay of casting technology and 3D printing technology.
During these processes, craftsmanship and digital technology are combined for the unceasing endeavor of next generation manufacturing in Japan.
Bringing the two conflicting elements into one form was also desired to realize this product. The "wood casting bowl" is a product line formed as if melting two materials together while combining the sand mold casting and woodcraft technologies. The product was made by a process that connects melted metal with lathe machined wood and attaches them. When using this product, two materials, tin and wood, exist between the user and the liquid in the bowl. The bowl invites the user to initiate a dialogue with temperature, texture, and feel, while confronting the two materials with different heat conductivity and material nature. Thin tin and thick wood: the thickness of the surface to be touched is different for each material, providing two physicalities to the user.
Which one to confront: the content of the bowl, or the materials in-between?
The focal point was how to form a shape while harmonizing the different natures of the two materials (e.g., sink marks due to the contraction of metal upon cooling, and carbonization of wood by the melted metal) and incorporating contingencies.
The project, realized in collaboration with the younger staffs of our company, is a new challenge of JMC in pursuit of the future of manufacturing. ( Seitaro Yamazaki )

山﨑晴太郎／ Seitaro Yamazaki
82 年生まれ。横浜出身。立教大学社会学部、京都造形芸術大学大学院建築デザイン専攻卒。芸術修士。PR エージェンシーを経て2008 年独立。株式会社セイタロウデザインを設立。2014 年より株式会社JMC 取締役。企業のデザインブランディングやプロモーション設計を中心に、グラフィック、WEB・建築・プロダクトと多様なチャネルのアートディレクションおよびデザインワークを手がける。2012 年よりラジオパーソナリティーとしての活動を開始。FRANZCOLLECTION 日本人初のコラボレーションデザイナー。
Design For Asia Award、IF Packaging Design Award、Ad stars、グッドデザイン金賞他、国内外の受賞多数。FRANZ AWARD 2013 やグッドデザイン賞のゲスト審査委員も務める。
Born in 1982 in Yokohama. He graduated from the College of Sociology in Rikkyo University and acquired an M.F.A. in Architectural Design at the Graduate School of Kyoto University of Art and Design. After working at PR-agency, he established his own business, seitaro design, inc., in 2008. He also serves as a company director of JMC Corporation since 2014. He mainly works on design branding and promotion design for companies, as well as art direction and design work for various channels including graphics, WEB, architecture, and products. From 2012, he began his activity as a radio personality. He became the first Japanese collaboration designer of FRANZ COLLECTION, and has been awarded many international and domestic prizes, including the Design for Asia Award, IF Packaging Design Award, Ad Stars, and Good Design Gold Award. He was a guest judge for the FRANZ AWARD 2013 and Good Design Award.
